Cervical Screening

The way Cervical Screening is done in Aotearoa is changing with the introduction of HPV testing as the primary screening test. You now have the option of doing a self swab. The ‘old-way’ will still need to be used in certain circumstances but you now have the option to do it yourself – or we can assist.

For those who are uncomfortable with having a cervical sample taken (what used to be called a smear test) or who have put off getting screened, the new test will be less invasive. The option to self-test means that some who have been hesitant to get screened are more inclined to do so.

The HPV test is very accurate at detecting HPV which causes more than 95% of cervical cancers.
